The man's name was purposely kept secret, fearing recrimination by Patton supporters. The Nazi brass never understood what the hullabaloo was all about. To them, slapping a soldier was all part of a day's work.

I don't know, but I like your question, so I starred it.
I know the role of the soldier in the film Patton was played by Tim Considine, but I don't even think they gave the soldier's name even in the credits--too bad.
Any historians with more and better information than I have out there?
