Good News for you...The Dell Inspiron 1100 uses PC-2100 type memory and has 2 bank(s) of 1 socket(s) each for a total of 2 memory socket(s) . The Dell Inspiron 1100 comes standard with 128MB of RAM and supports up to 1GB of RAM

First, you have to determine how many sticks of RAM are installed on your laptop. Chances are you have 2 128MB sticks to make up 256MB. If that is the case, you can't just buy a 256MB stick, because that would bring you to 384MB. Download Belarc Advisor and run a hardware scan on your laptop. It will tell you how much RAM you have in each slot. You will probably have to throw away the 2 128MB sticks and buy 2 256MB sticks. I recommend putting 2 512MB sticks in there.

The last person is correct. You have 128MB installed currently. Your maximum is 512 and as someone else said, any more would be pointless as it wouldn't be seen. The trick is finding out whether the 128 is on board (built into the motherboard) or a chip that's removeable. Once you figure that out you can determine whether you need 1 or 2 chips to make the full 512MB.

512-128 = 384, so 1 stick of 256 and one of 128. 512 of RAM isn't very much. Is that laptop old?

Thats what it means.

The CPU is only capable to addressing that much memory. You could put more in, but the processor won't see it.
