Well the rule of thumb is to put the largest sticks in 1st. However I would just take out all of the existing ram that you have and put the new stick in the "colored" dimm slot (Dimm slot 1) And boot up. If it boots up and works properly the stick is good. Shutdown unplug power and add the 2nd 512mb stick and reboot. And if that works then there you have it. If you are running dual channel you probably don't want to add in the small 256mb stick. Just put 512mb in Slot 1 and 512mb in slot 3 and go with it. Next upgrade should be 2x 1gig sticks in slots 1 and 3. Hope this helps.

hey what some of these guys are saying is that depending on the age of the computer all computers have a stopping point as far as how much ram you can put in it if you open the case there should be a jumper that sets how much ram you can put but it still has a limit check it out and see what it tells you like i used to have a computer that could only take 700MB of ram and that was it and i had a gig in it it just used what it needed and that was it

It may be that your system will only take 512MB. Some manufacturers allow a tweak to the bios to upgrade further, but you should contact them or access their website for more info.
