I had a girl once ask me "Can I go to the bathroom, please?" while we were having ice cream at a restaurant. I told her a simple "Will you please excuse me while I go to the restroom?" would suffice. I told her she could go ahead and leave after she said that (without any response from me necessary) and if I wanted her to stay in her seat I would tell her.

Perhaps she was nervous and intended to simply excuse herself but phrased it as a question instead. A simple "yes of course" would have sufficed as a response

I would never ask for permission. If you have to go, you have to go. It is unhealthy and potentially dangerous to hold it in. I would however say the courtesy, "Would you please excuse me?" It is not asking permission, but a way to politely excuse oneself from the table, also the promise that you'll be back soon.

Proper etiquette would say, when you need to excuse yourself from the table, and another person's company, you say, "Excuse me, I'll be right back." and go.

Most adults should not require a green light from a dinner partner to go pee. Unless it's that chick. In which case, you corrected her correctly.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! Are you dating minors or something??? lol. Only a kid would act in such a manner. I'm glad you corrected her because that is a weird situation to find yourself in. If I were you, I would be laughing, if you're not, you will definitely look back at the situation and laugh.

no, i wouldn't ask permission. I am a grown woman and do not require permission to go the ladies room. I would excuse myself as that is polite.

She sounds like a victim of very low self esteem. Abused people always "ask" permission ~ out of fear. Abusers demand 100% submission and asking permission to do the smallest things are normal for them. Be easy with her, it will take time for her to relax around you.

I would just say 'excuse me, I going to the restroom'. And if my date told me that I had to stay in my seat, it would be our last date.

Unless you're like four years old and you're at the restaurant with your parents, you don't need anybody's permission to use the restroom.

I just get up and go to the bathroom; now were we in the middle of a conversation I'd say "could you hang on and keep that thought..."
