I am planning to setup a wifi network to share my DSL connection. One question arises, will I be able to browse across floors or across rooms and how much does it affect the speeds ?

Wifi, works on radio frequency. the more walls & floors you have to transmit through, the more range you lose. A good rule of thumb is, each wall or floor you transmit through you will lose 10ft of range. The average range of a wireless G transmitter is 300ft. In an average 1500 sq ft house you want the transmitter located in the center of the house to get even signal strength though out the house. If you have a large or 2 story house you might want to look into getting an wireless N transmitter it has twice the range of a wireless G transmiter... Good Luck!!!

Yes it will work but the signal depends on how far you are away from the wirless router. Also if you are trying to go through many walls in your house. If the signal is weak in the room you are in, you can buy a wireless range expander which plugs into a wall socket away from the router. It will act like a jumper from the router to you laptop or other pc.

You will get the same range as a wireless telephone.
If you need to share but wifi is not essencial try HPNA. It work very well and it should be more than enough to reach any wheres in a house or small building. I know a business that use it and there in a 20,000 sq ft building.

It depends on what your walls and floors are made of. Concrete and steel studs can affect the quality of your wireless connection as can metal window screens.

Best advice is try moving your WiFi router to different locations to find the best place for it.
