It was well understood, long before George Orwell, that memory must be repressed. Not only memory but consciousness of what's happening right in front of you must be repressed, because if the public comes to understand what's being done in its name, it probably won't permit it.

When enemies commit crimes, they're crimes. In fact, we can exaggerate and lie about them with complete impunity. When we commit crimes, they didn't happen. And you see that very strikingly in the cult of Reagan worship, which was created through a massive propaganda campaign. Reagan's regime was one of murder, brutality, and violence, which devastated a number of countries and probably left two hundred thousand people dead in Latin America, with hundreds of thousands of orphans and widows. But this can't be mentioned here. It didn't happen.

I'll go old school:

1. Alexander the Great: Took a bunch of unknowns in Macedonia and conquered most of the known world.

2. Julius Caesar: Presided over the heydey of an Empire that still has its marks on current society.

3. Washington: Could be placed higher. Took a bunch of upstarts, defeated the most powerful nation at the time, and managed to avoid the temptation of becoming a new king. Unselfishly stepped aside, so nation could become democratic.

4. Churchill: Could have easily made a deal with Hitler after being kicked out of Europe, but united his people and held strong even when odds were against them.

Only presidents of US are great leaders??? Sadly they are mostly all bought and paid for by monied interests.

I would go for someone like Dr. MLK Jr. here or Mahatma Ghandi in India.

Reagan: Hands Down!

He was just voted the Greatest American Ever!

He edged out Abraham Lincoln, who abolished slavery, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

George Washington, the first US president who is considered the father of the nation, comes in at fourth place.

Current US President George W Bush #6 and his predecessor Bill Clinton #7 , whose presidency was tarnished by the Monica Lewinski sex scandal, are both in the top 10.
