I have a 1978 Marquis boat that has the Mercruiser 470 I/O setup. Whenever I try to shift into reverse, it just cuts off. Foward works just fine. The motor sounds just like you turned the key off when I shift into reverse. This is my first I/O boat, my others were outboards, so if there is something simple I am not doing, feel free to mention it. Yes, this is an old boat, but it is in perfect condition.

you may have a bad shift cable going to outdrive or what they call lower cable.
Disconnect the cable at the engine .Its the one that runs down behind motor and goes to outdrive. Do not turn the small barrel when its off .Then try to push and pull on the black plastic slide.if its stiff or has lots of resistance then its bad.
This is common in that it causes the intermittent shift switch rocker to hang up and kill engine.

I will make a few guesses. First check the propeller there may be a rope wrapped around and may be behind out of sight. There is a little safety switch inside the control box that may be causing this, I never seen it, but, it like a Neutral switch for starting, but, it only do the starter power. The other I think of is the control cables to the carburetor, may be able to watch how this all move as someone shifts forward/reverse. Check the obvious first. The control box is not hard, but, you need to really see where things go. There a little roller for the neutral detente and it falls out. You can see where it go in a corner metal, put a little grease on it to stick in place. Push down on the large wheel opposite the roller and slide it into position. The metal that the shift cable connected too, sometimes this wear, you will see if you open the control box.
I really not sure any of this would cause this problem, but, it all I know to check not being there.

it's called the momentary kill switch. it's located at the shift cable plate. about the size of a domino with a wire and a wheel to actuate it. you can disconnect one of the wires is you like and get by, or find a manual or mechanic and reset it.
