My sister just came back from an Alaskan cruise and I love the suvenior she brought me. It is a necklace with an Inushuk on it. It is a symbol used my the Inuits (Eskimos) of Canada and Alaska. They build these statues out of stones in the shape of a man. It is a symbol with deep roots in the Inuit culture, a directional marker that signifies safety, hope and friendship.
Here is what it kind of looks like. She said you will find them a lot. http://www3.mailordercentral.com/imagesofcanada/prodinfo.asp?number=48974
She got our friend a carved whale bone. She had asked for something that you can only get in Alaska.

My dad lives in Seward and a lot of the Cruise ships make stops there. I used to get a big kick out of the things people would buy from the souvenir shops there. I think the biggest sellers were caribou nuggets. Little balls of caribou poop dipped in gold and made into earrings and necklaces... Would anyone really wear such a thing??? The neatest thing I brought back from Alaska was this small polar bear sculpted out of ivory, by this Inuit artist Leo Kinnik. I will never give it up. I don't know if this is possible though because I think there are some laws about ivory being sold. (It was a gift.)

A small Totem Pole. Get one that is just a few inches high, either in wood or pewter. They are very inexpensive, three or four dollars, and are a great reminder of the trip.

A baby seal that was clubbed to death...just kidding. Take lots of pictures, and take alot of film with you. Everything bought in Alaska is very expensive. Local art is always a favorite of mine, no matter where I travel to.
