I am a single father of a 16 year old daughter. She is not sexually active and is open with this to me. She also has no problems with her menstrual cycle. When should she start getting yearly check ups ?

Sorry about the spelling, I just noticed. It should read.

The recommended age in the US is 21 (no, not 18!) or three years after first vaginal sexual intercourse.

There's no need for your daughter to go any sooner than that unless she's having some sort of problem.

She should go now. Do NOT listen to the people that say 18 or 21.

When a woman (or teenager) is old enough to have a period, she should be going. Second, even if she is 'open' with you on sexual topics, it doesnt always mean she is telling everything.

If she isnt sexually active, it will mildly hurt. She should let the dr if this is the case and they will generally be a lil more gentle.

At the dr's office, make sure she goes in by herself so that if there is something she needs to talk to the doc about she will.

Also, even if she isnt sexually active, you can still get cervical cancer.

When she is ready to become sexually active she will have a doc to speak with. She may be interested in starting birth control so that when she does become active she's already on it. And if she has any questions the doc can give her plenty of unbiased information.

I would say that you should ask her if she is ready now. Since she is not sexually active yet, there is not a need, however since she has menstruated and is not having problems, now might be a good time for a first visit. She can establish a rapport with an OBGYN and see that the experience is not that awful, without the excess baggage of a medical issue to solve. Good for you for thinking of this!

I would recommend that she see a doctor now at least to get a Pap. If she is not sexually active, her doctor may not need to see her yearly, but she should go, just to get comfortable with an exam and make sure everything is fine. If there is any family history of cervical or ovarian cancers or problems, her doctor should be informed of that also.

probably now, if she's gottn her period. she needs to get a pap and other cancer screenings, and maybe the new hpv vaccine. it's Great that she's not sexually active!! but you dont have to have sex to get cancer and the obgyn visits will screen for that. plus, shell have a dr she knows in case there ever is a problem.

I would say 18 or sexually active. 16 is pretty young and if she hasn't had sex, it may hurt (it hurt my friend). Hope I helped!
