The only french driver was the 4 times world champion the prof Alain Prost. There have been many great french drivers, in the 50's there was Maurice Trintignant, in the 60's Jean Pierre Beltoise, in the 70's Francois Cevert and Patrick Depallier , both of whom sadly died on the track. The 80's was the golden age for france as well as Prost there were Jacques Lafitte , Didier Pironi, Rene Arnoux and Patrick Tambay, in the 90's we had Jean Alesi and Olivier Panis, today there is noone however Sebastian Bourdais is doing nicely in champ cars.

Why do you say Alain Prost was unpleasant? I saw him a long time ago at the British Grand Prix. He retired right in front of where we were standing. Did he storm off? No. He took his helmet off, walked up to the crowd, shook a few hands, signed some autographs and finally threw his gloves for some lucky person to catch. That's the mark of a true sportsman.
Also, he never tried to ram his opponents off the track at high speed.
