I have known this friend of mine for almost 30 years and have not seen him for 15. He is coming to stay with me for a few days but i have heard he has joined a cult.Does anyone have any ideas how i can enjoy his company but not take interest in this sect he`s associated with, without offending him.

join a cult of your own, so you can politely tell him, sorry i've already got one.

Is the cult thing recent? Try to listen politely for a few minutes, then change the subject. Ask him about people, places, and events from before the cult. When he brings it up again, be calm but firm. Tell him that you disagree with his recent behavior but you feel it's not your place to judge so you'd really prefer to talk about other things. If he asks why you disagree, be straight up! Tell him what you don't like about it. If you fear for his future or are concerned about his well-being, tell him. At some point in the future he may wish to distance himself from this cult, so let him know that you value his friendship and want him back, as his old self. That way, he will always know where to turn when he's ready for change.
