having moved out of a property i discovered that the landlord had been opening my mail that arrived a few days afterwards and redirecting it to my work address. i had redirected everything allready but obviousley there was a cross over period. im sure this is not allowed? is it?

If you live in the US, I believe it is a federal offense to open someone else's mail.

Now, this only applies if he ws opening the mail itself, and not the mail box!

No one can open your mail.If the mail was sent there then the person is to mark return to sender.I do not now why he opened your mail except to be nosy.Its a federal law to open someones mail.

He should not have opened it, if there is anything you are concerned about the mail that was opened report it to the post office, they will tell you what you can do.

in brittish law it is an illegal offence to open someone elses mail.

No! It is a federal offence and invasion of privacy, worse than tax fraud. It is similar to break and enter, but of your privacy and personal identity.
