My mom says that if my cousin has a baby then I'm it's aunt. But I thought I could only become an aunt if my brother or sister has a baby. Am I really an aunt if my cousin has a baby?

No, Actually you are the cousin. If your cousin has a baby then the baby would be your second cousin, and so on. So if your 2nd cousin has a baby the baby is your 3rd cousin. But I think your mom is telling you that you are the aunt so the baby will refer to you as aunty. I have a cousin through marriage and the kids ALL refer to myself and wife as Uncle and Aunty. But they even if by marriage are cousins.

You're an aunt when one of your siblings or their spouses has a child. Your cousin has a kid, you are NOT that childs real aunt. However, some cultures refer to all older female relatives as Auntie.
