Hostas. There are many different varieties; for some photos see http://shared-visions.com/explore/gardens/hostaidx.htm. If your patio is exposed to freezing wind in the winter, you will want to move the pots to a more sheltered area. Hostas are available at most plant stores, including Wal-Mart!

Hosta's are my fav. They come in so many varieties now. There are different colors, leaf size, leaf shape.

You can also plant succulents. They don't require much water or care and come in many varieties.

Try a yucca or two. There are a bunch of different varieties as well.

You can also have hanging baskets. You need to have a couple so you can switch one of them to a sunny location every couple of days. This will give you a burst of color and the plants will get their sun.

Don't forget a water feature. Make a simple one and add water plants.

If you want a lot of color, impatients are great for shaded areas. They come in all colors, reds, purple, whites, etc, and grow fast. Go to local nursery and they will have a section of plants that love shade. You can find a variety of plants. Good luck!!!
