Last September I bought a Daewoo Matiz, against my better judgement but since i'm a student my budget wasn't too good. Anyway, I had to take it back about 4 or 5 times to get the alternator belt fixed after it squeeled heavily and fell off twice.

Anyway, now it squeels when I have the lights on, sounds even worse if I have the blower on full too!!! What can I do to shut it up, obviously a new belt isn't the answer?

When I accelerate or use the gears to decrease speed that is when the squeeling is worst. I don't get it?

So in summary, any use of electrics in the car makes the belt squeel!

I,m not familiar with Daewoo vehicles but a belt that repeatedly squeals or comes off is most likely caused by being loose or running on a pulley that is not properly aligned. Since you say you have had it checked several times to see if it is tight enough I would take it to a good shop that will carefully check to see that the belt is running straight on the pulley,s.

From what you have described, you need a new belt.
You may have had the wrong belt fitted. Some belts look the same when placed 'side by side', but even being a little over sized will prevent the proper tensioning, and cause slip (hence the squealing).
Go to a Motor Factors and ask for the appropriate belt for your car, and try that.
P.S. It's pointless spraying or rubbing the belt with anything The 'slip' is still there, but because you have lubricated the belt ' you won't hear the squeal

The belt is either stretched to the point of needing adjustment or replacement. If it has been squealing for more than 500 0r 600 miles it should be replaced because when it squeals it's slipping on the pulleys and getting hot in the process and will probably break quite soon. If it breaks you will have no drive to the water pump and that means, potentially, a boiling radiator and, possibly, a damaged head gasket. Ultimately you could have a siezed engine. Each stage increases potential repair costs.

It's loose!.....Put on a new belt and make sure it's adjusted properly. When the blower is on , the electric load on the system is higher and it takes more horsepower to turn the alternator, so if the belt is loose it will slip and squeel.......

The squealing is partly generated by the increased load on the alternator , due to a higher electrical load. The alternator belt is either incorrectly tensioned, or has stretched. It would be best to get a new belt, and tension it to manufacturer's specifications.

Also, I agree with the others - DON'T use WD40.

The more electrical items working (lights, wipers, fans etc} the higher the load on the alternator. It becomes harder to turn so the belt slips. Get a new belt fitted, easy to do, and tension correctly.
Oh, and forget the WD40.

if its an old or worn alternator belt it will queel or if it needs adjusting they stretch after awhile sometimes if the battery is on the way out the alternator is working extra hard putting a heavy load on the belt it probably just needs adjusting by a proper mechanic hope this helps

It's just a tad loose. it may well have stretched. For less than a tenner for a new belt I'd replace it. It's a simple DIY job that any body's dad can do in 1/2 hour.

Good luck

Woah padner! KEEP AWAY FROM THE WD40.They do make a belt dressing but WD40 ain't it.
Your electronics should not be running off you alternator they should be running off your battery which is charged by the alternator; ergo be looking toward you battery for the weakness that is trying your electrical system. But WD40 believe me and 99.9% of the gearheads on this site and we know who the 1/10th of one percent is. KEEP AWAY FROM THE WD40 AND YOU BELTS.

change the belt for a new one and make sure its tight enough. Never ever put anything on a belt, like oil or soap, or anything!! Another qualified engineer.
