If it's just the keyboard you're covering, you're OK. If you're covering the main body of the computer, or a laptop, you're asking for trouble. They make form-fitting computer keyboard covers which cover the whole thing, and each key is "individually wrapped", but it does change the feel of the keyboard. However, considering that a new keyboard just cost about $20 now. why not just use it until it dies, and then buy a new one.
But, if you're covering the tower when it's on, the thing will fry in about a week. Don't do it!!

All this revolves around the discipation of heat and the inflow of cool air. The tower should only be under a computer desk with no cover, it needs cool air to be freely available, and to have room for hot air to be expelled. I suggest you only cover it when it's all off, (no juice going in at all), and remove the covers fully when it's going to be on. Ventilation is everything.
As far as covering the keyboard with plastic film wrapping,.. it that doesn't need any cooling, so in theory that shouldn't be a problem, remember though,.. don't use anything with adhesive qualities,. you don't want the keys to be sticky and/or stuck down.
P.s,.. you mentioned over-heating,.. be sure to open your case/tower, (again with no power, being sure to touch something metallic on the CASE first, *NOT* a component), then clean off any residual dust laying on the fans; carefully,........ a small unused 1inch wide paint-brush is best, don't use a vacuum cleaner as that is often full of static electricity, (if anything will damage your pc faster than a blink of an eye - it's static electricity), when all the fans, (inc' processor fan), are dust-free, you can safely remount the side access door to your case/tower; and it won't over-heat. :)
Hope this helps.

Your PC tower needs to be properly ventilated during use, in order to facilitate the flow of air in and out and allow the fans to do their job. Therefore, putting a plastic cover over it would not be recommended, unless the PC is not being used. As for the keyboard, plastic film would prove a real nusiance whilst typing. There is a very good spray available - it's a can with a short, very thin piece of tubing that you can attach to the nozzle; with this, you can blow air through and shoot out any debris that's fallen under the keys. Wiping over the actual keys with a damp cloth now and again will keep them clean. It's good to look after our possessions, but don't forget that a PC is a working instrument and not an ornament.

You can use a breathable dust cover instead of plastic. I have bought one from Amazon for my ATX Tower and it has great quality and durability unlike those cheap plastic stuff. The cover is made of durable yet flexible modern copolymers, this dust cover slips over the top of your display for unrivaled protection. This protector guards your desktop monitor from dust, moisture, static, oils, paints, children, pets and more. It's available at Amazon. For more information check www.computerdust.com.

I would take that dust cover off if I were you. It will almost certainly block the PC's ventilation outlets.
The cling film keyboard is a good idea, but why not buy a purpose-made keyboard cover?

If your going to cover the tower, make sure the computer is not on, wait till its cooled down first.
There are proper computer covers you can buy to keep surface dust off, but, if you wipe your keyboard with a lightly damped cloth it will be fine.
No offence but it sound to me like you have a little bit of OCD, trying to keep dirt off your keyboard.

A cover will casue the PC to overheat.
Film wrap over the keyboard...why? It will stay fresh for months - you don't even need to put it in the fridge.

Take 10 points for that question...yes it's a good idea that every PC user should cover their PC's with a dust cover and I do, as well as keyboard.
