I would say so. That is a very accurate statement, though it doesn't explain all of it. It probably causes at least half of all of these things, however.
Most of the people that I deal with in my beliefs have no idea what the whole thing is about:

1. I'm a thin Size/Fat Activst. Supposedly my belief in the Size/Fat Acceptance movements means I'm advocating an unhealthy lifestyle. *Scratches flat stomach*
-Thank goodness that isn't true.

There's not one major group I know of that says "Get off the treadmill." Hence the magic word of the day: Acceptance of yourself whether you are unhealthy, healthy, heavy, thin, or anywhere in between. Because we're supposed to hate our bodies at all times...Not hating your body is the equivalent of advocating a unhealthy lifestyle... Right.

2. Though I'm not a big member of the Gay Rights Activsm community, I do believe in that concept, and I support gay marriage. I'm also straight, and christian. :p
I get questioned on both sides:
"You think gays should be able to get married, so you must be a (Insert comment bred from ignorance)."
"You're a Christian? (Comments about the taint on Christianity that is the belief in homosexuality being wrong as part of the majority of that community)"

3. Racial Equality is another big thing for me. I'm mixed, but I still get stereotyped as being a certain way. It's not just one-sided either: Being called "White" is another fine example of where the Civil Rights movement is going to go if people continue to be ignorant.

So I can't say it's that concrete, but in more than 1/2 of all cases of this: I would say that would be true.

In my experience, I have found that it does nearly all the time. Most of the people I have met who were racists, homophobes, or any other type of bigot, had little to no experience with the person/group they were prejudice against.

Then there's also the fact that people often pick up traits such as bigotry from close influences in their lives ingraining it into them. So instead of attempting to educate themselves as to how certain people really are; they cling to their false ideas that they are just "bad people".

i believe that it does. when you don't know someone and you look at them and ASSUME that they are a certain "type" of person THAT IS PREJUDICE CAUSED BY IGNORANCE. while being ignorant about that person, how do you really know how that one individual really is? and i also believe that being prejudice causes hatred. so it is a chain reaction, ignorance + prejudice=hatred.
