As other answers already state, it's an eight-sided shape. It's two dimensional (i.e. can be drawn or cut out of a sheet of paper but not a solid that you can heft) and encloses a symmetrical area. If you draw a line from each of the angles towards the centre of the space enclosed by the perimeter each of those angles will be identical and the length of each line will also be identical. the name derives from the latin 'octo' meaning 'eight', which is also the root of such words as 'octopus'. So a knowledge of Latin numbers gives an immediate clue to the number of sides. Here are the first ten numbers in Latin, and the names of geometrical 2-D shapes associated with them:
1 = I = unus (can't form an enclosing shape)
2 = II = duo (can't form an enclosing shape)
3 = III - tres (triangle)
4 = IV = quattuor (quadrangle, quadrat)
5 = V = quinque (quint, more commonly we use the term pentagon from the Greek for five)
6 = VI = sex (sexagon)
7 = VII = septem (septagon, or heptagon from the Greek)
8 = VIII = octo (octagon) - (bingo :-)
9 = IX = novem (nonagon)
10 = X = decem (decagon)
etc.
To close, The general term for any 2-D, space-enclosing shape with equal or unequal sides is pentagon ('penta' means 'many').
If a pentagon has unequal sides it's called irregular.
Hope this answers your question.

Just a point about the 50p thing. Thats not really too helpful as a 50p has 7 sides and they arent straight.
Its actually a reuleaux heptagon (each side is an arc centred on the opposite point) and its shaped that way so it will roll properly in vending machines.
