Because they are working class, uneducated Tory bigots. They haven't the faintest clue as to Parliamentary law in our island, and for that matter in U.S. Law. There are loads of precedents in both countries. In Britain we have Churchill, Hume, remember the Scottish laird, Callaghan, Balls, sorry Major and others. In the U.S. we have LBJ and Ford just for two.
In Britain a party is voted into power and the leader of that party, Prime Minister, can call an election at any time within five years. If for any reason the P.M. leaves office, a new P.M. is elected and carries on as normal. In the U.S. the vice president takes the No 1 job until the four year term is up. Does this satisfy pea brained Tories.

Because some people mistakenly believe we choose the Prime Minister at a General Election. We don't. We choose our Member of Parliament who supposedly represents us at Westminster.

I say "supposedly" as we do not have a fair form of election as the candidate with the most votes wins rather than the one most of the electors want.

If we made elections compulsory and had a "none of the above" option on the ballot paper politicians might actually wake up and realise their obligations to the people.

I assume you mean because as things stand at the moment, the tories would lose? I agree with you there, they're totally disorganised and should be pulling the labour government to pieces at every opportunity and there's plenty to nail them on. Personally I wish the tories would get their act together and destroy this lousy government for good.

They obviously think they have more chance of beating Labour now than when Brown has been in office a few more years, which means they believe Brown is going to do a good job.
