Many laptops have 2 brightness defaults (bright on AC power, reduced brightness on battery - extends battery run-time).
Put the system on AC power, and check the brightness adjustment (usually in the bios and/or FN+key combo).
If the brightness adjustment does not fix the problem, you may have a failing inverter board.
The inverter board is a high-voltage transformer inside the display assy that is responsible for providing power to the back-light (minature neon bulb).
If after replacing the inverter board, you still have this problem, the video interface is failing and typically requires replacing the mainboard (expensive and usually difficult to justifiy).
Inverter boards are typically $60-80 (my cost), labor is not difficult, but should be only 1/2 hour. (that is what I charge).
Best of success.

Sounds like your monitor is going or has already gone.
Best thing to do is purchase a new one. Good ones are available for less than a 100.00 now----used ones too much of a problem to get downloaded and up and running. Same yourself misery and just go to Best Buy etc. with the name of your computer, and system, and they will advise you.
