Yes however some older games do not work. but they are working on making the "backward compatibility" issues better.

You can play the majority of PS1 and PS2 games on a PS3, but not all of them.

Yes. The only tricky thing - which PS3 you've got - american (NTSC U/C), japanese (NTSC J) or european (PAL). U/C and J versions have no problems with old games, coz they have a chip to deal with them.
Euroversion has no chip (Sony removed it due to the cost reduction) - old games run on software emulation.

yes but in europe only some can be played because sony didnt use the chip to save money

most of them but not all. The PS3 emulates for both ps1 and ps2
