Dr Sues books are often a favourite with children and they are a great learning tool when teaching rhyming words.
Roald Dahl was also an inspired author with classics like The BFG, Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate factory and so many others.
Enid Blyton is another of my favourites. She wrote so many short stories and her novels were written so that each chapter could be said to stand alone. A perfect choice for bed-time reading.
If all esle fails the little golden books used to be good. I'm not sure whether they are still being made though.

My daughter is only 6 and loves Dr Seuss books (The Cat in The Hat, Fox in Socks, A Fly went By) and they are really addictive.
In my opinion, Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton are the best and this has been proven by still going strong now, years after original publication.
As a young teen, I also loved Judy Blume and Francine Pascal who wrote the Sweet Valley High books.

There is no accounting for taste, so I think everyone's answer is naturally subjective. Everyone certainly has the best children book author in his or her mind.
Rudyard Kipling? Roald Dahl? Hans Christian Andersen? Brothers Grimm? Those authors write classics children books.
Or, J. K. Rowling?
My best children book author is anonymous, the author of "Beowulf". A fascinating epic story with the theme of good versus evil, dragon-slayer hero, man-eating monsters... just the ideal story that whisks you away to an ancient world of fantasy!

Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, Arthur Ransome, Charles Kingsley, Hans Christian Andersen and you can't beat Aesops Fables because there's always a moral to them, sadly lacking in children's books today.

I don't know who is the best children's author but I can tell you our favorites: When I was a child, I loved Enid Blyton and Beatrix Potter. Then my little son (now not little anymore) used to love Eric Carle's books.
