China.
They are slowly buying up oil and raw material contracts from Africa and setting up diplomatic offices there.
They believe in economic development, a countries right to self determination and its only a matter of time before they have the continent sewn up and out of the wests hands.
How good that will be for the African people time will only tell. China is a new player on the world scene. One can only hope they don't do it out of the barrel of a gun and propping up repressive governments at the expense of everything human.
I do believe that China will try to lead by example and try to stop as much as possible to be out of getting their hands into a countries internal affairs. They seem to be a good study and seem to have studied the mistakes the west have made.
Lets only hope.
Peace
Jim

I have a different view. The West has misguided compassion, African leaders are corrupt and take advantage of the West's compassion in hoarding the foreign aid it receives, and African citizens either don't know any better, or are too busy killing each other.
Africa can only save itself. If the West continues throwing money at it, corrupt governments will stay in power.

We lack compassion??? Do you know how many millions have been spent for that country in the name of financial aid, medicines and political purposes? Do you know where that money goes? It gets stolen from the top people and they do not give it to the poor ..... that is one of the most poorly ran, disorganized and corrupt forms of Government in the world.
Years and years we have tried to help only to have the money siphoned away...we have no compassion? The LEADERS have no compassion for their citizens ! But getting involved would be getting our noses in their business and looked upon as Imperialistic...I say we let them figure it out themselves, they have only ran that place into the ground for centuries now. . After a while you have to start to wonder .

If we have learned one damn thing from Iraq, it is that change MUST occur from within. Intervention DOES NOT WORK. Africans have to become the masters of their own destiny. Until they are ready to do that, it doesn't matter how much care, concern, and compassion the international community has. Africans must save Africa.

Africa as a whole is too big a target to handle for any one attempting to solve the continent's ills. But it is possible for the better off nations there to help the poorer neighbours to minimise poverty. The youth in Africa can become a determined lot and take up the challenge of ignorance and poverty. It is the chronioc attitude of dependence that is the chief villain

I disagree that the West lacks compassion. What the West lacks is a reason.
And I believe the UN was working on this...
I do not like people who want to try to gain sympathy for the genocide of one group while we are dealing with the genocide of another group (remember, Saddam). And this is how this seems, when you make it an issue of "compassion." I don't suppose you think we will just waltz in there with food? It would have to be with guns. Then food. Just like Iraq.

those countries were fine under the White European colonial rulers...the entire place went downhill and suddenly needed "saving" only when the locals were allowed to determine their own direction and fate...they got what they were asking for and so why do we have to worry about stepping back in and "saving" them now?....its their problem that they asked and fought for...let them learn by their own mistakes...
