If homosexuality is considered an illness, then that means there should be a cure. As with any cure, money. So people who could make money off of people by claiming or "finding" a cure.

The idea that homosexuality was an illness dates back to Sigmund Freud and Richard Von Kraft-Ebbing, both of whom defined mental illness as being different from themselves. As the pioneers of research into human sexuality their views were accepted without question until the mid 1970s. The American Psychological Association removed homosexuality from it's list of mental illnesses in '74, and the American Psychiatric Association followed suit in '75. They did the same with BDSM in the late '80s, and, so far as I know, that is the current majority medical consensus world wide, though there will always be dissenters.

According to every major mental and medical health organization in the industrialized world, no - homosexuality is not an illness.
Certain backward countries and highly religious cultures have yet to realize this.
As for the reproductive angle, do you really believe that all sex is intended solely for procreation? The overwhelming majority of people engage in sex, not to reproduce, but to express love and experience pleasure.
Bonobo chimpanzees, are closest genetic relative among apes, engage in all kinds of sex all throughout the day as a way of cementing social bonds and resolving conflicts (whereas regular chimpanzees resort to violence).

it is not an idea. it is an orientation that cannot be changed.
firstly, it is not just in the west or regional specific, in fact, it was common in ancient china. especially among the upper class.
secondly, if your definition of natural is merely for the sake of reproduction, then why do we use condoms or why do people who cannot reproduce, take a post-menopausal women for example, still have sex, since its against nature.
additionally, homosexual behaviour can be found in animals too.

nope homosexuality is not an illness, fact!
this is the general concensus of all major international phycological associations
the reason for it is, people before wanted to explain homosexuality and the sins for it so the goverment told people much propergander, like they did with the iraqi wepons of mass destruction.
the told people it was an mental illness you can catch from another gay, they told people that children would get raped n killed by gays. they fed you bull and as a result rather than just saying "gay is agaist god" like the generations before that did, they now sed "gays must be killed, they will hurt and infect our children" the US goverment really f*cked people over with this crap
IN ADDITION TO YOUR POSTS:
homosexuality has been arround as long in nature for millions of years, i actually think it mite be natures form of birth control as it occurs more with gay men, the more they have older brothers for some reason, which makes sense if you wanted to prevent population growth.
there are many people for all sorts of reasons that cant reproduce and therefore by your logic are mentally ill; not everything is about reproduction, if it was we would not have art, fancy food, poems etc it would not make sense if we are just here to reproduce.

It's part of the normal human spectrum of sexuality. If you want some interesting concepts of why it exists pick up a copy of 'Discover' magazine june2007 issue. It is also not more prevalent in the west...it is just more talked about here.
