Sand is very good, they will love it. Make sure it is aquarium safe, and since they are so much harder to keep clean, regular cleanings are a must, or use snails.

There is alot of fuss about them but they function very well in my tank.

Try to get Apple, trapdoor, or mystery snails, they have harder shells and trapdoor snails have live young. Apple snails lay egg clutches at the surface so they can be removed easily.

Please keep in mind the snails can't just live off of algae they need other things to eat like zucchini, peas, or lettuce, they absolutely love cucumber.

I buy snail biscuits/wafers/cookies, and a specially formulated snail "milk".

Sand is actually very easy to clean because it is so dense, that all debris sits on top of it, you just run the vacuum over the top and the sand stays in the tank because it is so heavy. For normal white sand, you can use the sand they use in sandboxes, or the sand they use for sandblasting. Make sure you wash it really well before puting it in your tank though!

Sounds good to me [if an under gravel filter isn't used]. Try to make sure the sand is specifically prepared for a fish tank, and washed clean of dirt and debris.

Hmmm.... it sounds OK, but make sure the gourami doesn't bully the neons.

sand will be harder to clean thus you run the risk of a black algae problem in your tank. try black pebbles instead you may be happier.
