For me it's really anything by the Mahavisnu Orchestra, especially the last track on the Apocalypse album, Hymn to Him. Close to 20 minutes of the best guitarist playing over an Orchestra produced by George Martin. Can't go far wrong with that!

In a Silent Way by Miles Davis is also well worth a listen.

Green Onions - Booker T & The MG's
Classical Gas for the Guitar - Don't remember who it's by (could also just be "Classical Gas")
The Soulful Strut - Young-Holt Unlimited
Frankenstein - Edgar Winter Group
Star Wars Remix - (no idea who it's by - was an actual instrumental track built off the enormity of the Star Wars movie and adapted into 70s dance music)
Sleepwalk - Santo & (don't remember the other guy)
Fifth of Beethoven - Walter Murphy
Popcorn - Hot Butter

There are HUNDREDS, - if not, THOUSANDS, - of them, around, - from WAY BACK! What is given, for you, below, is a short LIST, - PLUS the names of the ARTISTS, that made them FAMOUS, of a FEW of those, that I LIKED, myself!

Albatross - Fleetwood Mac
Eye Level (van der Valk theme tune) - Simon Park Orchestra
Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield
Apache - Shadows
Portsmouth - Mike Oldfield
Dance With the Devil - Cozy Powell

Hope these help to set you on your way, to a FABULOUS compilation, - I'd LOVE to hear what ELSE you put on there!

My top favorite instrumental of all time was - hands down - "SLEEPWALK"!!!!

I commend "Sparky" for remembering this seldom-heard #1 hit from 1959. It was written and performed by Brooklynite brothers, Santo and JOHNNY!

My two other favorite instrumentals would be "(Theme from) A Summer Place" by Percy Faith (1960), and "(Theme from) Romeo & Juliet" by Henry Mancini (1969). Both these songs also hit number one on the pop charts!

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
