It is a rock cod. I am 99.9% sure. I live in hawaii, where we have tons of reef areas and tons of piers. Rock cods, like to hang out in little crevises. You will normally find them in shallower waters. Most of the time too, they will be caught right along a rocky area near the shore. They are reef fish. They are very good eating, like most cods are.

I would put it in the family of Cottidae which are related to the rockfish. There are both freshwater and saltwater species (about 300 in all). A few photos for comparison: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/cottidae.htm

These are all characterized by the "oversized" head, two dorsal (top) fins, large side fins they use for scooting around on the bottom, and a row of spines at the front of the gill covers.

Some are edible, and are used for bait, but the eggs of these can be toxic. Your guy doesn't look big enough to provide much of a meal.

looks like a sea bass or a cat fish. where was it caught? fresh water or salt? nonetheless all freshwater fish are edible as long as the water isn't polluted and it is filleted and gutted. poisonous fish exist in salt water but they are usually oddly shaped or brightly colored.

That fish is commonly caught in tide pools. When I go fishing, I catch a few of them to use for bait for larger fish, but every once in a while, I'll pop one in my mouth! Good, but kind of crunchy!

yes it is eatable. i caught one when i was young and now i cant remember what it is called. it is a bottom dweller so if u don't trust the water where u caught it i would not recommend eating it tho.

Don't know what it's called, but it sure doesn't look like anything I would want to eat.
