When chosing a desktop background you want to make sure that the image size you are using is as close to your desktop resolution as you can get. If you are using say a 1024 x 768 screen resolution and the actual picture is only 300 x 400 pixels, Windows will "stretch" the image to make it fit. This is what causes the blockiness. The bigger the difference between your screen resolution and the image you are using the worse it will look. If you insist on keeping this background image and you want it to look smoother try reducing your screen resolution to 600 x 800 or 640 x 480. These resolutions are usually not desirable though as everything will be huge and your desktop area will be reduced dramatically. most applications and web pages won't fit on the screen either.

I would strongly reccomend finding a different background picture. I usually use google image search for my wall papers and use the following search methods to get results that match my desktop resolution:

"subject wallpaper 1280 x 1024" wihtout quotes where as subject can be replaced with what ever subject you are looking for for example "Disney wallpaper 1280 x1024 and the 1280 x 1024 can be replaced by what ever screen resolution you are using. Note at the bottom of images in a google image search the image resolution is listed that is the nnn x nnn numbers below the image. these are the numbers we are looking for to match or exceed your screen resolutionl

Tip: using a larger image than your display resolution will cause windows to shrink it to fit your screen thus making the image actually appear finer so you can use larger images than your desktop resolution just try to stay away from smaller ones.

Good luck hope this helps

It's an LCD monitor, right? I think the best resolution is 1280 X 1024. LCD monitors usually have one resolution at which they look best, and at all other resolutions the pixels are kind of blurry and skewed.

For windows XP:

try right clicking on the desktop and then selecting properties and then settings. Use the slider control to pick a new resolution.

You must use ONLY the "Native" resolution for your specific LCD monitor. Read The Friendly Manual (RTFM) for your LCD.

Then, if you want bigger text and Icons, re-post.

My 17" looks perfect with 1440 x 900, if your video card supports that.
