Get a PC. More programs are made to work with Windows. PS: I use Windows Vista and it works fine.

PCs, by which I mean computer running any of the Windows operating systems. PCs have two main advantages:
1) They have a larger user-base, and therefore more software, which has attracted PC gamers.
2) Their basic and consistent design allows for easy access to internal hardware, which those that constantly upgrade hardware, again, especially gamers, prefer.
If these two advantages do not effect you then you probably want a Mac. One main advantage that is often boasted about for the Mac is the fact that there are a lot less viruses. This is no lie. All the time I have spent surfing the web, downloading and the like, I have never encountered a virus or any other undesirable computer thing (except spam, which does not relate to the computer).
Plus, for me I find gaming on my Xbox 360 more enjoyable because:
1)no hassle of having to upgrade hardware
2) Large amount of good games
The only notable downside is most of the RTSs suck on consoles.
Basically, If your a gamer or you find you like to upgrade your computer's hardware a lot, you should get a PC. Otherwise the Mac was made for you.
Vista, which I believe many people agree, has been a bit of a failure, due quite a bit to how demanding the OS is to your hardware. Leopard, from what I've seen so far is looking good, quite better than VIsta.

It sounds like you are asking: What is the best operating system? Can one really compare which are best? IMHO, you can’t.
They are all different, offer different pros and cons, and fill different needs for different people.
I personally believe that the best operating system is the one that you like and use and that meets your needs. That is the bottom line.
If your really asking: Is a MAC worth the price. Yes. Try this experiment: Price out a MAC at www.apple.com Then, price out a virtually identical PC at www.Dell.com or www.hp.com
Then, on the Windows PC, add Vista Ultimate, M$-Office (Neo-Office free for OS X), Norton Internet Security (no OS X malware), Back up software (Included), and any other software you may need.
Then, compare prices, you will find that the PRICE will be very close.
Finally, go to an Apple Store and take one for a test drive, ask lots of questions and decide for yourself.
Ask them about Leopard, too.

Since it's the family PC, someone in the house will want to play games. That pushes the decision over to Windows. However, some of the Intel based Macs allow you to have Windows on there also. Shop around and see if you can find a deal.

Get Windows. If you are using it for work, it's more user friendly. The world runs on the Windows OS. Don't be left out of the loop just because "a Mac looks prettier".

I would go with a pc, but I would stick with the Windows XP OS since Vista has a few issues... or you could get something like Linux...

Go with a mac , if you want to wait until leopard then thats fair enough. With the new intel macs you can upgrade them some what, however if its a mac pro then you can upgrade it as much as you like, new hard drives, graphics card etc etc

I personally prefer Windows but Macs have less viruses because less people have Macs! Macs are way too expensive! With Windows, you can have more software and its more cheap than Mac! Its really on what you really like!
