I had a Kirby and it didn't last any longer than my store-bought brand. I paid the same amount for 1 Kirby Vacuum as I could have for 12 store bought brands. I was told that after a certain amount of time ALL vacuum cleaners do not suction like they did when brand new and that includes Kirby's too. So it just made since to buy New. Plus, I found it VERY difficult to get parts and service for a Kirby.

NO, I hate my kirby vac! ( sorry grandma Marge)
When my grandmother died, I inherited her kirby. The thing is big and klunky. Changing the belts is something I have not tried to attempt. So a friend he does it for me. You can not bags or belts at wal mart. You have to go to a vacume shop or Kirby store.
My mother has three ElectorLux vacumes. One for each floor of her house. I have tried swapping the kirby for one. But she does not like Kirbies anymore.
I try to convince her her mother would want her to have it... No such luck. I would feel guilty if I were to get rid of it. So I will keep it for ever and ever. The house I bought has hard wood floors, all for the three season porch. So I use it there..
Oh one good thing, each spring when it is time to put up the swimming pool, it works to blow the rim up around the pool.
Other then that Kirbies are more of a hassel, they are heavey and klunky....
I do not know what is worse the salesman who try to come into your home or the machine itself....

Haha, I worked at Kirby for like 2 days. I hated the job.
But the vacuums are awesome. My grandma had one from 1972 I think and it worked better then new ones. They are really worth the cost and the older ones work good too if you can't afford a brand new one.
EDIT: I meant new vacuums of a different brand. The old ones are VERY heavy, as all the parts are solid steel, but the new ones they had me selling were very lightweight for all that came with them. And I saw them suck things out of carpets and beds I would have never guessed was there.

My mother in law and her mother in law both received "refurbished" Kirby's as wedding gifts 36 yrs. ago and over 60 yrs. ago... They still work although my GM in law just gave hers away because it's too heavy... She's 87 ! My mother in law just had hers rebuilt and it works like new... I would suggest if you want one to get a used one and have it rebuilt...

My mom has had one for at least 15 or 20 years. Yes, it still works great, but it's way too heavy. For that reason, I wouldn't buy one.

I am 34. My folks have one that is a few years older than me.
Yes, it still works. It no longer works great, but it does work on small messes.

I had one for like 5 years but it was older. It was heavy and built like a tank but it always went through belts constantly. For me it wasn't worth the cost and hassle from that alone .
My friend's was like that too.
