WASHINGTON — Democrats want to cut President Bush's budget for Guantanamo Bay prison in half, beating the administration to the punch in shutting down the facility for terror detainees.

The White House says Bush has already decided to close the U.S. prison in Cuba and transfer more than 370 terrorism suspects elsewhere, possibly including the maximum-security military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

For those who pay attention to such things, the United States is out of compliance with the Geneva Convention in its treatment of the prisoners it has taken in its "Global War on Terror." This means that the persons keeping those prisoners are guilty of the exact same war crimes for which we hanged about half a dozen German and Japanese soldiers after WW II.

Closing GITMO would be a first step toward re-establishing the United States as a law-abiding nation instead of the rogue state that it has been since September 2001. Of course, it will all go to hell in a handbasket if Giuliani is elected to the presidency, because the war criminals will be put in charge of the domestic program to suppress dissent.

Make no mistake about the fact that Giuliani intends to suppress the First Amendment as well as any whispers of disagreement that emerge once the Duce takes office.

I don't think they're saying they should free them. They want those prisoners to stand trials and go to prisons on US soil. Instead of just holding them forever without trials or charges brought up against them.

Gitmo oppositions are saying put them through some fair legal system and send them to jail. Like other criminals. The Bush administration is saying these are special war enemy combatants and should be treated differently.

The problem is if we can't prove their guilt in any type of court system why are we holding them? If it is war time then when would war on terror end? These are some tricky questions people deal with on this issue.

I think a common thread among well-intentioned Democrats and Republicans is to permit the detainees face their accusers and defend themselves against charges with the benefit of an attorney.

For your information, many detainees have been released, albeit after a long detention period for no discernible offense. Most of the detainees are picked up on the battle field, where conditions are confusing at best. It is quite reasonable that innocent bystanders are detained with no fault on their part, nor on the part of the soldiers who picked them up.

You use Fox News as a source, a well-known right-wing mouthpiece. Would you accept MSNBC as a source? I would not, as it focuses on the left. I also avoid Fox News.

Let's face it, the United States should have declared the detainees Prisoners of War, at which point, within certain limitations, they could have been held in perpetuity. There is nothing wrong with Gitmo and holding the detainees there. The problem exists in the secrecy surrounding their detention. It's just not the American thing to do.

Open a Federal prison in D.C. This would provide many high paying jobs to one of the most depressed inner city areas in the United States. And Congress, along with the media, could inspect the condition of these "innocents" everyday!

I just think that if they're really guilty of something, we shouldn't be afraid to actually ACCUSE them of something, offer them legal counsel, and give them a fair trial instead of just holding them indefinitely. I don't think they should be set loose, no, but I don't think it's very American to hold for 5+ years without even telling their families where they are. What if some of them ARE innocent? I'm not saying they all or even any of them ARE, but it's only responsible to consider the possibility and we have nothing to lose by doing so, but by not doing so we have our dignity and principles to lose.

No, they want the Republicans that still support Bush and the war in Iraq to take the prisoners into their homes until peace comes to Iraq. How many will you be housing?

I'm sure the terrorists have realized by now how loving and humane a society we are and that they were wrong for wanting to kill us.
After all while they were in our prisons we built them a Mosque and gave them Halal meat and provided them with Attorneys and interviews with the media.
They were treated with the utmost respect and consideration while lawfully detained in our Politically Correct Judicial System.
So I think it's only fair since they love us so much that we let them back out into society where they can continue in their peace loving ways to worship and pray to Allah.
And since it was so mean of us to keep them in prison for so long I think we should give them reparations for all the time they've missed with their loved ones.
And while we're at it I also think we should give them the medal of honor and the keys to the city as well.
And wouldn't it be nice if we could hook them up with good paying jobs just to make their life a little bit easier?
In fact I think they should be given jobs in the Oval Office just to prove there's no hard feelings.
Our president could throw parties in their honor and Pelosi,Feinstein,Murtha,
Kennedy,Kerry,Clinton and
Durbin can all be invited to help celebrate.
I think that would be the right thing to do.

I won't debate that there are dangerous men on gitmo....
but there maybe innocent men..like it or not they have a right
to a fair trial...Watching fox news is fine, but I hope you search other news media for a more balanced conclusion !
In my opinion GITMO SHOULD HAVE BEEN CLOSED YEARS AGO !

Oh stop being so dramatic.
There are republicans that want Gitmo closed too.
Leavenworth is not a hotel suit.
I guess Bush is scrambling to do something first because he knew the funds were going to be cut.
If they are all guilty then why did we release so many with no charges pressed? And they served years!!
