Maybe because its the only affordable game that even kids in dirt poor areas can manage to play with some bricks to mark the wickets,a flat wooden board as a bat and a cheap rubber ball.....and it also gives a chance for so many to play together.Tennis/golf/badminton the new passions of urban, rich India are not affordable for the aam janta. When opportunities for other sports also become available to everyone than these sports too will become a religion like cricket. But I don't see that happening in a very long long time.

While cricket is a most popular game in India, I do not think that it is regarded as a Dharma or religion of India. The fact is that since cricket generate more revenue as compared to any other sports in India, development of cricket is faster than any other sports.

Cricket gives true entertainment and moments after 1983 worldcup finals have lifted the spirits of many Indians which formed the basis for such a craze in India.... Indian team got Sachin at the correct time when sports like hockey was losing ground....I feel this is the reason and overall the importance given by media plays a major role for the importance given to cricket in India..

Not really...in India, sports aren't very big. The people there are more intellectually orientated and not athletically inclined. Cricket is the only sport that they play there, so therefore they are the best at that sport and not Basketball or Soccer or anything else.
Even in Cricket, they can be considered a pretty bad team.

120,00,00,000 ( 120 croes ) INDIAN has to be engaged in some activity.
Though it look simple but extremely difficult job.
Atleast cricket kill their 4 - 10 days for every match ( 2days for preparation, 1 - 6 days for match, 1 / 2 days for seeing highligts).
Therefore it is a good time manager. And it is RELIGION OF INDIAN, PAKISTANI, BAGLADESHI, SRILANKAN.
