Well from the reviews the iphone can only access the internet through Cingular (A T&T) network at speeds up to 2G, meaning it can receive data at about 300 kilobits per second, which is extremely low. Most cell phone carriers like Verizon and Sprint have internet speeds on their mobile phones at around 700 kilobits per second which is roughly DSL speed. I would wait for the next iphone model to have been internet speeds.

I spoke with a Apple salespeson and they said that you can purchase the iphone at the apple store. Iphone 4 gigabyte model will retail $499.00 while the 8 gigabyte model will be $599.00. However once you purchase the phone you will have to activate the phone online. To activate the phone online they will require a credit check.

If you purchase your iphone at a Cingular (A T&T) store then they activate the iphone for you immediately. All cell phone carriers will require a credit check before activation. If your credit is low then they will require a deposit fee in addition to the purchase of any phone depending on your credit score. At the moment I haven't heard any stores selling the iphone without a contract.
