Some castes have multiple gothram and some have only one. But widely a gothram denotes a particular caste. So people who have good knowledge about this caste x gothram matrix can easily make out. But it is vast and it is difficult to get a single person who is a master of this matrix :-)
I do not know if there is any documented information about these translations.

I do not support the caste system - but added my bit of understanding about it, just for information sake.

Only certain community people use the Gothram (way of finding people from which part or section or region or community they have come from. Many other caste people do not have Gothram System and they do not know the origin of their fore father . When a person mention his name he will tell father ,fathers farther , and fathers fathers father Name(Great grand father) and following he will mention his gothram > It means the family name. That is all Thanking you Yours VRVRAO

The Gotra or Gothram system is started in ancient India. The descendants or followers of some particular sage was given Gotra as per his name. Now the caste system have been implemented many years after that as per their profession at that period. Therefore all Gotra can have all the caste or any gotra can have any caste.

At present all of our Gotra is "Human" and our caste is "Indian". Why to bother !!

You don't have any need to know a person's caste. That system is archaic and unfair. Don't be a snob.
