That’s a tough one to know simply by knowing Gothram. The Caste is followed by Sub Caste & then come Gothram. No idea if the Gothram will ever help you know the Caste of the person. My Gothram is Bhol, followed by Sub Caste which is Mahaottra & Caste Mahajan. Now if some one knows about my Gothram which is Bhol & if I don't use my caste as my last name it won't be possible for him to know my Caste itself by knowing the Gothram. Caste are usually used by most as the last name but its not always true in all cases as some use their Sub caste as last name & few use Gothram as last name. So the best course to know the real details is to check the persons Horoscope or Tava as we call it in India or better ask him to tell his details himself about his Caste, Sub caste & Gothram. Mind you just for the legal information the two person having same Gothram are considered as blood relatives that may be covered under the relationship within the degree of prohibition that is one of the necessary condition which is required to be fulfilled in Hindu form of marriage as provided under the Hindu Marriage Act,1955.

In places like Hardwar, Sangam, Pehowa, Puri Garh Mukteswar etc. ancestral records are meticulously kept by Pandas. Even though our native home town was somewhere in the north west frontier province, when my grandfather"s elder visited that place, he seemed to have made an entry in the records at that time l9l6, and the details were correct. To locate your entry what these people need is your hometown and family name or gotra. Contact with such persons may be of help. I am told that the entries made in these records are admissible in court also, and in my own case at Hardwar, we found entries relating to more than 200 years back, and of 8 generations with names etc. correctly stated.

This is a vast subject.I think,no body will be able to give you the perfect answer except for the brahmin, ksatriya and vysya cummunity.
For this, you need to approach the various community centres and obtain their lists for retreival of caste as per the Gothras.
