The Silence of the Lambs stands alone and you don't need to read anything else. Red Dragon which precedes it only has Hannibal Lecter in in peripherally, and after trying to read "Hannibal" I can say that I don't think the same guy wrote it.

The style is wrong. Hannibal is wrong. Starling is wrong. And the whole plot goes for horror rather than the building suspense and terror of the earlier books. Authors do let others publish under their names for reasons of their own. I think he was probably tired of the series and didn't want to write anymore. If you think I am wrong, research Rex Stout and Carolyn Keene (of Nancy Drew fame) There have been about six or more Carolyn Keenes. Of course in these two cases the authors had died and it was their heirs and estates who made the deals. The original Carolyn Keene was a man and when he died his daughter took over for years. After that it was apparently just a stable of writers that the publisher hired who didn't even bother to read the earlier books and made many mistakes which were quite irritating to true Nancy Drew aficionados.

And, of course, Margaret Mitchell's heirs sold the rights to Gone With the Wind so that the sequel "Scarlett" could be written, very badly.

I would imagine so. I read the sequel to silence of the lambs without ever seeing or reading SOTL before. I followed it fine. I will admit about half way through I decided I would like to read the other stuff just for more insight. But I was still able to follow and finish reading the story line first.

I read "Silence of the Lambs" first and didn't need any background to help me. I enjoyed it without reading any of the other books.
