The apposable thumb seperates us from all other animals. It is also worth more money to an insurance company than any other finger. At my place of business the insurance company pays only 10K for a finger but 25K for a thumb. Most doctors will try to save a thumb by replacing it with big toe if the orginal thumb is to mangled or lost. You're right it is Friday. I think my brain is overtired. =)

The thumb is not 'technically' a finger - it's just a thumb, therefore, a hand only has 4 fingers and a thumb.
The fingers bend in two places and the thumb in only one.
Anyway, I don't know why we have a thumb but it is necessary to do a lot of things..............

It used to be the pinky but in olden times the Romans noticed Christians didn't hold the wine glasses w/ pinky, so they banned them. That's why priests wear pinky rings today.

penelope was on the right track, but there are a wide range of creatures that use an opposable digit or appendage to grasp objects and or give them an advantage in nature.

monkeys, racoons, crabs, scorpions, sloths....the list is very long if you think about it.
