John Cale. I think he is far more innovative music wise. He thinks outside the box musically.

Lou Reed. After all, he's the one who wrote "Rock and Roll"!!! I first discovered this song 30 years ago when the Runaways did it. Then, about 15 years ago, I discovered Mitch Ryder's version. BOTH are classic....but LOU REED wrote it!
There's always been a mystique about Reed & Cale & Nico & the Velvet Underground & the whole Andy Warhol NYC/'70s scene...very intriguing! If you can get your hands on a copy, read "Psychotic Reactions & Carbuerator Dung" by the late, great rock critic Lester Bangs. He was totally OBSESSED with Lou Reed, in a very freaked-out sort of way. The book has to be at least 20 years old by now, but worth seeking out if you are interested in these people!

Baed solely on the cover of a leonard Cohen song John Cale did a few years back, I stand by Cale forever.

John Cale is great. I especially like the album that he and Brian Eno did together, but I'm going to have to say Lou Reed (although he absolutely sucks live).

John Cale seems to have much more soul, my personal opinion though.
