also why are the numbers powers of 2? (i think i saw 24 once on an ati card tho)
I understand basically what anti aliasing is from common knowledge and reading the wikipedia article on it.

Antialiasing works by analyzing all the surrounding pixels.

The number means how many pixels around the existing pixel to process (sort of)

There's an article on Extremetech.com on what they really mean.
