I'm planning a kit car and it would be good to find a donor car.

No not in America. However, be the new kid on the block and do it. Ge a Pontiac Fiero that has a motor in the rear and make it front wheel drive. the other rear engines that are obtainable price wise are the chevrolet corvair and the Vw rear engine cars.

No but back in the early 60's when Buick first came out with the Sky Lark it had a front engine and RED drive with a trans-axle instead of the standard engine transmission drive shaft rear end. The engine was a small Aluminum V-8.

You might be able to convert a flat 6 Subaru all wheel drive to rear engine..

Front-wheel-drive would totally negate the benefit of having the engine in the rear. The engine's weight should be over the drive wheels for better traction, unless you have the old front-engine, RWD set-up. But, hey, suggest it to toyota. They might try it and people will suck it up like crazy!

I think a bug Volkswagen? is rear engine. Not a car buff so can't get specific.
