Just trim off the branches that hang over into your yard...if it's a big deal...thats legal. You still have to live next to these people right?

By law, you can prune a tree back to your boundary, but the wood belongs to your neighbour and must be given back. Best to explain to them what you are doing because you'll be in trouble if the tree has a Preservation order. It is serious offence to even trim a tree with a TPO.
Pruning the branches back will unsteady the tree, poisoning it, hammering it with nails, shooting it or setting fire to it means you will have an unsteady tree for several years, and THE TREE KNOWS WHY! I wouldn't walk under the tree if I were you comrade.

By now, I'm assuming you have changed your mind.
Tree law is pretty unambiguous. You can trim back
the branches, as long as you don't threaten the long
term health of the tree. Creating an unbalanced crown
or weakening the tree could pose a liability for you.
So, get a shade gardening book. Grow some foliage plants.
Reduce your chances of getting skin cancer.

I'm sorry you're taking so much abuse from some your answerers. I agree that wanting to kill the tree is a bit much but as someone who used to have a not very nice neighbor, I can understand your frustration. When you asked the neighbor about it did he say he would cut it down? If so, you could nicely remind him and even offer to do the trimming yourself if he doesn't have time. If he's uncooperative, you can probably cut any branches that are on your side of the property line. Check with local officials first - local ordinance about these things vary.

It's his property (his tree) extending onto your property.
You've done him the courtesy of discussing the removal of branches with him before you did anything, and he has rudely ignored you. Don't return evil for evil by killing his tree, but don't be a doormat either. You don't need his permission to prune branches from his tree that extend over your property line. Try to read up a little on pruning branches before you do this, as you really in your heart of hearts don't want to kill the tree and escalate the bad tension between your neighbor and you.
Here's to a nicely trimmed tree giving some, but not too much, shade to your sunny side of the street.

Plant different plants, because unless the tree is hanging onto your property, then you don't really have any legal reason to kill the tree (and even if the tree is hanging onto your property, there are only certain things you can do). Maybe you could offer to trim the tree for your neighbor and clean up after?

If the branches of his tree are entering over your property line you have every right to cut them. But don't kill the tree.. poor tree it means no harm. Maybe go late at night and cut some branches.. it's not like he can glue them back on haha

leave the tree alone, try planting some shade plants
I have a hard time believing you're much into plants if you want to cut down a tree so you can grow some weeds in your backyard, tree killer! now I'm all emotional and I told myself I wasn't going to be emotional over such an insensitive question! the tree is there to help you, maybe someday lightning will hit the tree and avoid you so you might want to leave it up. and the birds may build nests in the tree instead of your window sill. and so will the bees. And when the termites come and they will, they will eat the tree first so you can prepare for them so just, leave the tree alone! hug the tree you tree hugger you know you want to, just kiss it and make up! Life's too short to fight about nonsense!~

I think he would notice that. I don't think you have a right to destroy a tree (probably worth a few thousand in replacement cost) because your yard is too shady.
I also think you asked the exact same question, with the exact same wording, several months ago.
