I'm 36 wks and had a doctors appt. today and they said that I was 2 cm dilated. I have more discharge than I have had throughout my whole pregnancy and am cramping also. Although the cramping is not occurring right at this second, I do keep getting really sharp pains right above my vagina, in the pelvic area. Can anybody tell me what this is?

The discharge could be your mucus plug, and the cramping could be contractions -- either Braxton-Hicks or the real-deal. Try laying on your left side and drinking plenty of water. If they do not subside for about an hour, it may be the real deal. Real contractions will also extend to your legs and back sometimes. If you think it might be the real thing, I'd start to pack for the hospital (just to be on the safe side). Especially if they become stronger, longer, and more frequent.

If the contractions become 5 minutes apart and are about 1 minute in duration for an hour, then it's time to call labor & delivery.

Its most likely your hips preparing for the spread. You're getting close and your body is releasing hormones to loosen that pelvis. When you start feeling , and watching your whole belly tighten up, that's labor. Start timing.

If the pains subside in a day or so, chalk it up to the doctor having long fingers and pointy tips. lol. I almost forgot how sore I felt after getting checked for that.

Discharge is normal at this point as it could be the plug and it sounds like you are having braxton-hicks contractions....call your doctor/midwife/dula....whomever and double check with them....best wishes...
