Any printer I've gotten comes with a User's Guide and installation instructions. Just follow them to the letter. Basically, you:
Insert the CD or download the driver
Install it
- At some point you will be told to connect the printer to the computer and the AC.
- After you connect it, you will see a message "new hardware found"
Because you installed the driver above, installation continues
You should be told installation was successful.
Now, Restart before you continue

Might be a little different on the laptop because I don't know how many USB ports you have. If you have limited ports and use them for other things like flashdrives, you might run into a problem. Just be sure to go through the "safely remove" procedure before you unplug a flashdrive or the computer may not recognize the printer.

If need be, you could get a hub, although some devices tell you their product might not be as effective on a hub which includes additional devices. You can only try to see what your laptop is capable of.
