Why do we sing "Rock a bye baby" to lull our little ones to sleep when the song is about putting your baby in a tree and letting the wind crash the cradle to the ground?

Because rock a bye baby has been around since the beginning of time. Maybe thats why I'm so screwed up now!

I always wondered that too. I guess it's just the soothing voice of the parent singing that melody that is calming. Even when I was old enough to understand the words it actually didn't bother me....no nightmares about it, just wondering why the song was so silly.

Well..not to take the cuteness away..it was written to describe the baskets that Native Americans swung their children in hung from low branches..sometimes the small branches would break..I had to study some lullabies for a nut English prof..I think it is also that the tune is relaxing..

As a lesson! If you are a bad baby, I will put you in a tree!

Man, it's a creepy song. I've always thought so.
