what is the difference between "living in hope" and "things hoped for"?

"Living in hope " means that even though your life might be going downhill you should not stop hoping for the best. "Things hoped for " is like if you have given a job interview you hope that you get it so, the job is the 'thing' which is being hoped for.

living in hope is hope for intangible things, things hoped for is the opposite, the materialistic and superficial end of the spectrum. living in hope could be hoping that your situation in life will increase, whereas things hoped for could be hoping for a new car.

I guess the first describes the life of a person, and the ladder discribes the things themselves which are hoped for.

No difference ,really.You must be hoping for something if you are living in hope .You can't be hoping for nothing.Therefore you are hoping for things when you are living in hope.
