Why is it that no one is mentioning either Sany Koufax, or Warren Spahn?

Overall career with amazing peak seasons -- Walter Johnson or Roger Clemens.

Stunningly extended peak -- Lefty Grove.

These are the only three men I ever consider for Greatest Pitcher Ever. They each in turn have been utterly brilliant -- often league-leading brilliant -- at doing the pitcher's job, which is to prevent baserunners and prevent runs from scoring.

"Greatest" is something of a fuzzy term; be more specific and we can narrow three down to one. I prefer great seasons to sparkly, big career numbers, because a great season does more to help win a championship (the annual goal of the team-based enterprise) than do several merely good seasons.

If Pedro Martinez comes back half as good as he used to be, he will eventually enter consideration for Greatest Ever. But he's not there yet.

Walter Johnson.

Cy Young got a bulk of his wins pre-1900, very dead ball era. Walter Johnson got his wins when the opponents were Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner.

Johnson held the all time strikeout record for 5 decades.
His ERA+, the measure of his era against the league average is better than Clemens, Youngs, Matthewsons.

110 career shutouts is also a record that will hold for a very long time.

Johnson also played on some VERY bad Washington teams and still managed to win 417 games.

I think if Cy Young and Walter Johnson were to have competed at the same time, Johnson may have 600 wins.

The greatest pitcher ever was Cy Young. Over 500 wins(all-time leader) and the award given to the best pitcher of the year in each league is named after him(Cy Young Award).

Sandy Koufax - best hard throwing left hander in the game's history. Retired at his prime before injuries took their toll. Koufax respected the game - unlike Roger Clemens who extended his career thanks to steroids.

Nolan Ryan would be a close 2nd - 7 career no hitters and 56 career 1 hitters while playing for mediocre teams throughout his career. - he would have been a 400 game winner had he played on some real contenders and could still bring it in his mid 40's for 9 innings - unlike the Clemens and Randy Johnson. Koufax is still a better leftie than Johnson - who cares if Johnson struck out 20 (as did Clemens).

CY Young is. 511 wins, no one will beat that. He has the most losses ever too but look at his win%. One of the tops all time. I'd give #2 to Walter Johnson then throw in Maddux or Clemens somewhere in there.

Koufax. no question about it in a six year span he dominated. if Tommy John surgery existed he would have had a longer career and would be talked about more.
