What a trackball is, is a stationary mouse, and instead of moving the whole thing around the desk, it allows you to just spin the ball in the mouse. The benefit of this versus a standard mouse with your laptop, is that since you dont have to move it all around the desk to move the cursor, you can just use the trackball and dont need any room.

its just a mouse alternative .. it would help in gaming for sure ... i would rather have an external trackball usb mouse myself tho ...

it's just another way to move the cursor around on the screen, like a mouse or a touch pad.
