West of Eden; Winter in Eden; Return to Eden by Harry Harrison. He also writes the Stainless Steel Rat series, the Bill the Galactic Hero series, & The Hammer & The Cross series (which I highly recommend).
Ringworld; The Ringworld Engineers by Larry Niven - he writes a lot of great books
Titan; Wizard; Demon by John Varley
Little Fuzzy by H. Beam Piper
The Skinner by Neal Asher (sort of a scifi, pirate, fantasy combo)

I find the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind hard to put down. There are several books in the series, the first one is Wizard's First Rule. There is a prequel, "Debt of Bones" but I recommend reading it in order with the others by publishing year. I think it helps keep some of the mystery and suspense.

Here is some relatively new stuff-
Uglies, Pretties, and Specials (a trilogy) by Scott Westerfeld
Peeps by Scott Westerfeld
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
All of which absolutely amazed me. Prepare for some shockingly electric plot twists!

I like Anne McCaffrey's The Crystal Singer (it's only a trilogy) and Piers Anthony's Adept series (again, only a trilogy). They aren't heavy science fiction, I suppose (both authors are better known for fantasy), but they're tops for me.

science fiction. deffinately Orson Scott Cards. "Enders Game." I'm in to fantasy and don't read much science fiction but "Enders Game." was absolutely awsome for any genre, and has won just about every award a author can win.
Tad Williams. "Otherland." series was good too.

Octavia Butler's PARABLE OF THE SOWER is a really terrifying near-future take.
Nalo Hopkinson's BROWN GIRL IN THE RING is both SF and fantasy. also a near-future.
Jonathan Lethem's GUN WITH OCCASIONAL MUSIC is really fun future noir.
