Only thing that fits that description to me is a power steering pump.
Unless it's a Wankel engine in which case it would be oil and gas.
Idiot me, next time specify a lawn mower putz, since that's the case it's probably self propelled, add 60-90 weight gear oil.
Nothing like little details after the fact.

I would say that's your power steering fluid, have someone familiar with car's look at it, explain it to you, and check it.
