Years ago the dopamine hypothesis of hallucinatory schizophrenia was taught. Now many psychiatrists believe this hypothesis is not true. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter. The typical (neuroleptic) anti-psychotics blocked D2 dopamine receptors which is supposed to stop over stimulation by the neurotransmitter. But serotonin is increased by atypical newer "tranquilizers" and dopamine receptors are minimally blocked. The atypicals have about the same effect as the typicals on schizophrenic symptoms so the hypothesis was thrown into question. Dopamine neurotransmitter overproduction had been hypothesized as being the cause of the symptoms of schizophrenia including hallucinations.

As a schizophrenia paranoia outpatient who has hallucinated and has studied some biochemistry I don't think they know what causes hallucinations. I personally believe the chief beneficial effect of anti-psychotics is the TLC that goes along with their administration. Before the advent of anti-psychotics in the early 1950's psychiatric wards were "snake pits" whereas after their introduction the patients were given more care and kinder attention and improved.

I do not care much for the materialistic explanations of evolutionary psychology.
